Searching for a job – whether you’re in college or are looking for your dream gig after graduation – isn’t easy for anyone. To make the process a little smoother, we’ve gathered our best tips for finding your dream job below.

Job Search Tips Anyone Can Use

  • Tailor Your Resume

This is one of the most popular pieces of advice around, but you shouldn’t skip over it! You might be a perfect fit for a position, but if your resume is full of generic skills and doesn’t really say anything about what you did in past positions, companies will skip right over it. Take the time to read through each job listing and update your resume to highlight the specific skills and experience they’re looking for. It will pay off!

  • Update Your LinkedIn

…and if you’re not already on LinkedIn, get on it. Tons of recruiters use it to help fill positions, so you need to make sure you’ve got a great profile, meaningful connections with past and current coworkers, peers, and mentors, and a page that highlights your experience well. These days, your LinkedIn profile is just as important as your resume!

  • Show Some Personality

Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine! Make sure you’ve gotten a feel for the company and understand their company culture, of course, but hiring managers and employers like to see your personality so they can access how you’d fit in with the rest of the company. If the company you’re applying for is notorious for their funny social media, add a witty statement into your cover letter. If everyone is joking around in your interview, don’t be afraid to throw one in. It’s important to always be professional and respectful, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be yourself, too.

  • Send a Thank You Note

It’s never outdated to say thank you! If you’ve had an interview – whether it was in person or on the phone – always make sure to send a thank-you note. A simple thank you email is better than nothing. In it, thank whoever interviewed you for taking the time, tell them how much you appreciate it and enjoyed meeting them, and reiterate something funny that happened or that you and your interviewer bonded over. Not enough people take the time to do this, so you will stand out!
