Richard Branson is most known for starting the popular Virgin Record company. But he has been in business at least in his mind ever since he was a young child.
He helped start over 400 companies later but we thought we would take a look at how he began when he was only a 16-year-old kid in high school trying to find his way in the world.
Richard Branson grew up during the Viet Nam conflict. He decided to get involved in the situation by protesting the war. But Branson stated that he wanted to do more than just protest. He wanted to do something constructive that would change things.
In Richard’s Younger Years:
So, starting at the age of 16, he created a new magazine and became a bit of an activist. He hoped to reach thousands of people with his views on the war and convince them to petition Congress and the President to get us out of Viet Nam.
He left school at the age of 16 to start the magazine, to address the political issues of the day. It had some limited success and helped him learn the ropes of how to run a business including the creation and distribution of a publication that he created.
He said that back then the word “entrepreneur” did not even exist, so he had to learn all the things about running a business to survive. Later he got into the music field when a young 15-year-old kid brought him a demo and said that no other record company would take him on.
So Branson set out to figure out how he could help promote this young man’s music. He liked his music, and it was an instrumental that he produced and helped distribute and to his amazement, it was used in The Exorcist film which came out a few years later. This catapulted of the young man and Richard Branson to fame for having created something original in the music world and help further launch his Virgin records label in a big way.
Richard Branson’s rise to fame happened partly out of circumstance and partly out of his desire to do something great and to make an impact in the world.
The marriage of his political views about the Vietnam war coupled with his love of music and wanting to figure out how to solve severe problems helped make him a huge success.
What can you do to make an impact in the world with the skills and talent you have?
Further, what idea can you develop that you could try for either in a technical institution or a college or university?
Think about how you can use your skills to make the world a better place, save people time or money, or make their lives less stressful.
If you can solve a significant problem that no one else has answered, you can be successful.
